This leads to a decrease in the compactness of the stratum corneum, faster progression of keratinocytes to the surface and effective exfoliation of keratinized nucleus-free cells. Thus, the thickness of the stratum corneum is reduced and the process of differentiation and renewal of the epidermis is stimulated. Besides, alpha-hydroxy acids can stimulate the formation of signaling molecules (cytokines), responsible for triggering and realizing pro- and anti-inflammatory reactions throughout the body, by causing the accelerated exfoliation of the stratum corneum. Hyaluronic acid is a typical polysaccharide essential for maintaining a normal water balance in the human skin and keeping the skin hydrated for a long period of time.
